THE CHALLENGE
Marble structures and columns at many historic sites represent some of the most important and fundamental architectural elements in a building. Over time, many of such marble features become subjected to serious damage, whether in the base, middle, or crowns by fungal infection.
Pathogens play a critical role in the deterioration of architectural marble elements of (historic) buildings by mechanisms such as :
Powdering
Cracking
Bio-corrosion from the excretion of corrosive organic and inorganic acids.
Microbial and fungal deterioration hence affect both the physical and mechanical properties of marble, amidst other agents of degradation such as weathering from acidic rain, carbonation, sulphation and acidic chemical solvents, UV and mechanical wear. Combined with these effects the formation of black biofilm on stone surfaces can lead to the partial or complete loss of monuments and disfigurement of a buildings' stone material.
OUR SOLUTION
We propose the use of multi-functional, ultrafine, high specific surface area nanomaterials embedded within polymeric matrices to obtain highly bioactive engineered stone composites, venetian plaster and or marble nanocoatings with self-cleaning and consolidating properties.
Such nanocomposite coatings are aimed at the long-term preservation of marble stone structures and monuments with the conferred multifunctional surface protection being capable of acting as a remedial conservation, mechanical reinforcement and the prevention of microbial and fungal deterioration, in one step.
We offer next-generation nanotechnology solutions for marble and engineered stone, to confer the following benefits :
Biocompatibility
High bioactivity for both gram positive and gram negative antimicrobial
Anti-fungal protection
Robust chemical stability against acid attack
UV protection
Photocatalyst for the degradation and complete mineralization of environmental pollutants and dyes, even in aqueous solution.
Increased mechanical (compressive and flexural) strength in engineered stone.
Reduced porosity for reduced water permability and increased stain resistance
Deep structural repair of cracks by virtue of the ultrafine size and consequently, the very high blaine of our nanomaterials, that enables their penetration into both visible (macro) and invisible (sub-micron) cracks in marble features..
FOR PERSPECTIVE :
Marble ultrafine particles have a mean size of 3 microns (3000 nm) while our nanomaterials, depending on the product(s) chosen, have particle dimensions ranging from 0.001 to 0.025 microns (1 - 25 nm).
The blaine (specific surface area) of marble powder is 7006 cm²/g and that of our nanomaterials varies between 388,000 to 635200 cm²/g
